Legally speaking, anything that you own becomes part of your estate when you die - this includes digital equipment.


You need to ensure that your personal representatives are able to access your digital assets in order to open your phone, computer/laptop etc and deal with your emails, contacts, photos and such like. (your fingerprint will not be available!)

Make a note of your digital assets/accounts and how to access them.

·       Own website

·       Email

·       Social Media (Facebook, X, Instagram etc)

·       Financial sites (Banks, Building Societies, PayPal, Share trading etc)

·       Photos

·       Ebay

·       Amazon

·       Other shopping sites

·       Travel sites

·       Professional Membership sites

·       File Sharing sites (Google Docs, Dropbox etc)

·       Media Sites (YouTube, Netflix, WhatsApp etc)

·       Back up systems

·       Online publications

·       Document files

·       Gaming accounts

·       Password Manager details


Appoint someone to take care of these accounts – separate people for business and personal perhaps. You also need leave them specific instructions stating how the accounts are to be handled and what they are to do (transfer to spouse/children/business partner, delete etc)

 

You need to decide how you will keep this information – Online, Safe, on paper etc and ensure information is kept up-to-date. We suggest it is reviewed at least annually. You also need to inform the individuals you have nominated where the information is.
